Your Shortcut to Professional Integration: Soft skills workshops to support career development in Finland

Are you curious about what it’s really like to work in Finland? Do you want to build your professional presence and network in a Finnish context? Are you starting to wonder what career options exist beyond academia?

Here’s your chance to find out!

In collaboration with Research Professionals (Tieteentekijät), we at The Shortcut are holding three interactive workshops where our career coaches will guide you through key topics to support your professional journey in Finland. Whether you’re preparing for your next career step or just beginning to explore your options, these sessions offer practical tools, cultural insights, and the opportunity to reflect, connect, and plan your next move.

During three weeks in May, our experienced coaches will explore the real challenges and questions you have about employment and careers in Finland.

All the workshops will be held online, from 14 to 16 on three consecutive Tuesdays: 13.5, 20.5, and 27.5. The language of the workshops is English.

 

13 May: Explore the Reality of Working in Finland: Everyday Practices, Expectations, and Workplace Culture with Lidiia Salo

This workshop is designed for professionals in Finland who are curious about career paths both inside and beyond the university world. We’ll talk about:

  • What Finnish working life looks like day to day
  • The systems, structures, and laws that shape how things work
  • Unspoken rules, cultural habits, and what “normal” means in a Finnish workplace

The session offers practical insights, space for reflection, and a chance to ask questions in a supportive setting.

Lidiia is a career coach passionate about helping international professionals in Finland gain clarity, build confidence, and find the right strategies to land jobs they truly enjoy. As an international professional herself, she’s experienced every step of the Finnish recruitment process firsthand – giving her unique insight into the realities of working life and workplace culture in Finland.

20 May: Building Professional Presence in Finland: Personal branding, Communication, and Networking with Yvonne Westerlund

How do you present yourself professionally in the Finnish job market? What makes a personal brand stand out while still feeling authentic?

In this workshop, we’ll focus on building a strong personal brand that highlights your unique strengths and aligns with the Finnish job market. You’ll also explore how to communicate with clarity and confidence, and learn strategies for making meaningful professional connections in Finland.

Yvonne is a warm hearted and seasoned career and leadership coach who specialises in career development, intentional communication, networking, mindset matters and self-confidence when pursuing one’s dreams. She is dedicated in supporting both international talents and Finns in navigating the ever changing local work landscape.

27 May: Considering a Career Move? Group Brainstorming on Transferable Skills and Job Opportunities Outside Academia with Anna Weissenberg

In this peer-driven brainstorming session, we’ll explore potential job opportunities outside the university setting and help you identify and talk about the skills that can carry over to other sectors. Through guided reflection and group discussion, you’ll leave with new ideas, fresh perspectives, and a clearer picture of your possibilities.

Anna specialises in supporting highly educated individuals in their professional development and through strategic career transitions. With her extensive expertise in coaching, mentoring, human resource development, communication strategies, and personal and professional growth, Anna serves as a partner for those navigating the complexities of career trajectories within and outside academia.
