Education International: Forward despite the backlash: LGBTI rights & the Freedom of Association

Tilaisuus on englanniksi.

The Council of Global Unions LGBTI Coordinating Committee will host an online webinar on 26 June 2024 from 14 to 15 CEST (from 15 to 16 Finnish time).

Despite growing visibility within the trade union movement for LGBTI rights and equality, we are now seeing the proliferation of targeted campaigns against the progress toward equality for LGBTI workers driven by authoritarian and populist politics. Freedom of association, assembly and expression are at the core of LGBTI equality and form the fundamental pillars of trade union rights.

This month, the UN Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI), Professor Graeme Reid, will report to the Human Rights Council on how LGBTI communities are facing a coordinated backlash against these rights.

On 26 June 2024, the Council of Global Unions LGBTI Coordinating Committee will host a webinar where the UN Independent Expert will present his new report together with a range of LGBTI trade unionists and civil society leaders to frame the current anti-LGBTI backlash and to chart a way forward to protect and reinforce trade union and LGBTI rights. The webinar will run from 14h00 to 15h00 (CEST). Interpretation will be available in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.
