Welcome to Helsinki!
There is lots to do when you arrive in Helsinki but one of the most important things to do is joining a trade union!
If you’ve arrived in Helsinki in the last year and you are an early career researcher in the capital region – at the University of Helsinki, Aalto University, Hanken Business School, University of the Arts, at a University of Applied Sciences or in a Research Institute – then this is the event for you.
We’ll be sharing all the information you need about how trade unions work in Finland and what role they play in your career as a researcher.
The Union for Research Professionals (Tieteentekijät) is the biggest and most active trade union in the higher education sector. We exist to protect and improve your working rights as a researcher through advocacy, coaching and support.
We’re hosting the Early Career Researcher ‘Welcome to Helsinki’ event on Thursday 24th September 16.30-18.00 on the City Centre campus of University of Helsinki:
Minerva building, room K113, Siltavuorenpenger 5 A
Free pizza and refreshments!
Speakers:
- Miia Ijäs-Idrobo, Senior Adviser at the Union for Research Professionals, will share all about trade unions in Finland and the work Tieteentekijät does to support early-career researchers
- Juan José Quispe, Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Helsinki, will share his experience of arriving in Helsinki last year and his union journey.
We also have some activities for you to network with other newly arrived researchers and we would like to hear your trade union experiences from your home countries.
The event is organised by member associations of Tieteentekijät (Union of Research Professionals) in the capital region: University of Helsinki (HYT), Aalto University (ATTE), Hanken Business School (FFSH) and SATY (Finnish Association of Academic Researchers).
