Negotiations for a new collective agreement at the university sector began on Friday – makers of the future deserve fair terms of employment

The university sector was the final public sector to begin negotiations for a new collective agreement this spring.

The Association of Finnish Independent Education Employers (AFIEE), which represent the Universities and Negotiation Organisation for Public Sector Professionals (JUKO), Trade Union for the Public and Welfare Sectors (JHL) and Trade Union Pro (Pro), which represent the employees, began their collective bargaining on February 7.

– We wish to reach an agreement that satisfies both parties and shows respect towards the employees, says Chief Negotiator Katja Aho from JUKO.

The key objectives for the employees’ side are, among others, the length of the collective agreement, salary development, business travels, research period system and working time issues. Climate and environment issues are also part of the objectives.

JUKO has traditionally advocated for percentage based general salary rises. The objectives regarding salary rises will become more precise when the negotiations proceed.

– The employer has their own objectives concerning salary rises and texts, and there are also some proposals to weaken the terms of employment. There are also mutual interests for both parties. Our aim is to have constructive discussions about these common interests, Aho states.

At the university sector negotiations, JUKO is represented by Chief Negotiator Katja Aho (JUKO), Executive Director Tarja Niemelä (Finnish Union of University Professors), University Advocate Hanna Tanskanen (The Trade Union of Education in Finland, OAJ), Chief Negotiator Petri Toiviainen (Social Science Professionals), and  Advocacy Director Mia Weckman (The Finnish Union of University Researchers and Teachers).

The collective bargaining at the university sector is conducted between JUKO, JHL, PRO and AFIEE. All agreements at the universities end March 31.
