On January 30, the Helsinki University Association of Researchers and Teachers (HUART) organised an Academic Self-Defence Event at the University’s Viikki campus in association with the Finnish Union of University Researchers and Teachers (FUURT). The event was a success, with about 50 participants in attendance.
The first half of the event consisted of a general introduction to HUART and FUURT by invited speakers Thomas Hackman, Vice Chair of HUART, and FUURT Coordinator Miia Ijäs-Idrobo. During the second half of the event participants divided into groups to discuss typical problems encountered by researchers, such as working on fixed-term contracts and grants, employees’ rights and salary negotiations, earnings-related (unemployment) allowances, and the various benefits of becoming a member of the association, such as travel insurance, etc.
FUURT’s lawyer Salla Viitanen, members of HUART’s International Affairs working group, organisation secretary and Chief Shop Steward Tiina Niklander were present to guide the discussions and answer the questions of participants. Among other immediate feedback, participants suggested organising cross-campus events, if possible more frequently.
