HYT Listens

We are launching HYT Listens – a new campaign to improve the working conditions at the University of Helsinki.

We want you to choose our campaign topic. We are listening to hundreds of you to identify and understand the work issues facing members of staff.

Our question is simple – what would you like to see changed at the University of Helsinki, and why?

We have created lots of ways for you to take part in conversations in workplaces, canteens, and coffee rooms across all our campuses, as well as online.

Following six weeks of listening and collecting stories, you can then vote on which issue you want the union to prioritise at our Fall General Meeting (and Pikkujoulut) on Thursday 27th November.

Here are 8 ways you can get your voice heard in HYT Listens!

  1. Complete our Survey

We invite you to complete our short survey to tell us about the changes you would like to see at the University of Helsinki.

You can answer the survey anonymously. You do not need to be a member of HYT to complete the survey, so please share with your colleagues!

2. Host a Change Conversation

We encourage members to chat to colleagues about the change you’d like to see at the University. Can you host a 15-30 minute discussion during your coffee break or in the canteen over lunch? Simply gather one or more of your colleagues for a chat, and then tell us how it went afterwards.

3. Sweat and Rant at our Listening Sauna – Thursday 20th November, 16.30

We are hosting a special HYT Listens event – in a sauna! Join us for an evening discussing what you’d like to see changed at the University with our listening team in the sauna. Places are limited, so sign up quick!

4. Attend our Pop-Up Stalls

Meet our team at one of our pop-up listening stalls and share your story over a free coffee and cookie!

29th Oct, 11-13 – Physicum, Kumpula Campus

5th Nov, 11-13 – Biomedicum, Meilahti Campus

12th Nov, 11-13 – Metsätalo, City Centre Campus

5. Come to our Helsinki Halloween Horror Stories – HYT Social

We are hosting a Halloween Social at CoolHead Brewery in Viikki after the Academic Self Defence Event on Tuesday 28th October, 18.00-20.00!

Join us for a casual drink and share your horror stories you’ve had from working at the University. Whether they are fun or serious, we want to hear them. Even if you don’t have any stories, it’s a great opportunity to meet fellow union members and network at the end of the work day.

The brewery serves delicious beer, non-alcoholic drinks, and pizza.

6. Share our flyer and poster with your colleagues

Please share our flyer and posters with your colleagues on Teams or print them out and put it in your workplace!

7.  Share your story one-to-one

If you have a story to share but would prefer to share it privately, you can book a time to speak to one of our Listening Team one-to-one. Simply contact our Advocacy and Communications Specialist, Michael Pugh on michael.pugh@helsinki.fi and we’ll arrange a time for someone from our team to speak to you in either Finnish or English

8. Listen to stories and vote at our Fall General Meeting & Pikkujoulut on 27.11

HYT Listens ends on Thu 27th November at our Fall General Meeting & Pikkujoulut! Members will hear the results of the listening and hear a selection of the stories we’ve gathered. We will then vote for the issue we want to take forward as a campaign in 2026.

This will be followed by our General Meeting, dinner, drinks and pikkujoulut festivities.
